Kudos to the folks in the Marche region for not parading another scantily clad Miss Italy around to promote their wines. But Dustin Hoffman? What in God’s green earth does he have to do with the furthering of Conero or Piceno? Using celebrity to sell Montepulciano? I’m sorry Italian wine marketers, I for one, just don’t get it. It’s another disconnect, like the constant use of Flash on Italian web sites or the misunderstanding of social media like blogs, Twitter and Facebook, hell even Youtube, to integrate the new media into the culture of Italian wine.
I saw that huge billboard at the Marche pavilion at VinItaly as well and thought, 'this guy looks a lot like Dustin Hoffman." I never thought it really was him. LIe you said, "Huh?"
Painful indeed! Have you come across the Brachetto D'Acqui "spot," promoting that wine, considered as an aphrodisiac in Roman times, as an elixir for modern couples with a speciality in bad double entendres. The whole set are on: http://www.brachettodacqui.com/comunicazione/30/tv-spot.aspx Gruesome in a different way, especiall "personal trainer" and "chitarrista." The good part is that none of them exceed 15 seconds...
Ratso Rizzo: You know, in my own place, my name ain't Ratso. I mean, it just so happens that in my own place my name is Enrico Salvatore Rizzo. Joe Buck: Well, I can't say all that. Ratso Rizzo: Rico, then.
There is something to be said for the fact that there is an ever growing younger wine market. the 25-35 single career oriented with disposable income...we grew up on media blitzes and 30 second bits on Sesame Street and MTV. Maybe this is just a way to keep wine marketing current and relevant. We think that way over at <a href="http://www.basic-wine-info.com>Basic-Wine-Info.com</a> at least. Plus we like scantily clad women trotting about selling wine. To each their own. Who cares so long as wine is revered and enjoyed?

A two-minute ad that seems like five minutes. Next time, set the snooze alarm.
It's probably the Ratso Rizzo connection. They think he's Italian.
Have you ever noticed that Pacino, Hoffman, and DiNero are never in the same room together? Just wonderin'....
